A Physicist's Guide to Smoked Gouda

sheesh. i had forgotten how high school teachers, especially ones who look down on their students, or are power hungry, will try to direct any situation, regardless of whether or not they have the authority to do so.

i just finished a lunch seminar with the rehs (research experience for high school students) and ret (research experience for teachers) participants. at the beginning, one of the teachers appeared to have helped set up for lunch and was guiding everyone else on what was available and how many we should take. she had facts at her disposal, like that one of the reu students had special ordered a sandwich, so no one else should take that one accidently. ok, thats fine.

then during the lecture, another teacher got up and tried to adjust the lights, but really ended up just playing with the switches cause he didnt know how to work them. another teacher kept talking to the woman next to her through most of the lecture.

finally, at the end, the same woman who was talking made an announcement. "could everyone do me a favor?" she asked. "please put your trash in the cans on the side of the room." yeah yeah. were college students, ok? we know! then someone asked about recycling, and one of the teachers said something that was just the last straw for me. "there are NO recycling bins," he said.

now thats just outright FALSE. why did he say that? did he just assume that since he hadnt noticed the blue bins all over the building that they JUST WERENT THERE?

for what? i said, meaning recycling for what material, but they took me to mean for what reason would you recycle? so after a few crazy looks, i just told them the bins are in the stairwells.

so yeah. now i really wonder about the maturity of some high school teachers, and how they handle a position of authority.
