A Physicist's Guide to Smoked Gouda

2002-11-17 4:54 p.m.

i was just wandering around tidying up my room when i was overcome with a sudden sense of foreboding. go figure.

health services, yeah. they fixed me up nice and fast. i think its so strange that i was sick for so long without realizing it ::looks to the three week old pile of laundry in the corner:: all those days i just couldnt get up and felt like crap.

so when we dont have band, we watch movies. wednesday i watched wonder boys in sorin, thursday i watched mauvaises frequentations, friday i had plans to watch the lion king but didnt, and saturday it was vampire hunter d, bloodlust, and sixth sense.

mauvaises frequentations was followed by a question and answer session with the director, jean-pierre ameris. he doesnt speak english very well, so he answered the questions in french and then one of the professors was supposed to translate to english for those who do not speak french ... except she would sometimes forget and just continue conversing in french with the director and the mostly french speaking audience. i understood enough of what he was saying to realize she wasnt translating very faithfully, and was quite impressed that i remembered as much as i did. i have no problem understanding my friends who speak french with american accents, but it took me a while to get used to listening to a native speaker.

it was a very very strong movie... in the discussion, someone brought up the idea of male authors/directors exploiting the female victim in their work, but its far more true that delphine is not a victim in mauvaises frequentations. i would contrast her to emma bovary but it has been far too long since ive read that, id prolly get some details wrong. but its still true that delphine was so very strong, once she had made a decision. i think the film's treatment of adolesence was very accurate (in general that is, not to say at all that the events the story is based on are typical), and jean-pierre ameris' comments on how adults can forget that kinda of mental and emotional turmoil were right on target. even though his goal was not to make sweeping generalizations on any one theme, there are still certain things that are common to many lives.
